Senate President Godswill Akpabio has warned Nigerian governors against misusing state police when it is eventually established.

Akpabio gave the warning on Tuesday during plenary as the National Assembly prepares to approve state police to address the country’s insecurity.

Recall that on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu sent a Constitution Alteration Bill to the National Assembly seeking the creation of state police.

The Nigerian Senate has scheduled Wednesday (today) for the passage of the state police bill, it was reported.

“Many of us like to go back home after we are through here, not afraid of the state police.

“Even the present governors will not remain in office forever, they should not be afraid of the state police they created.

“Your conscience will be looking at you, and they will be interested in what you have to say. Since 1960, Nigeria has not had the courage to decentralize the police. We’re doing this for the first time.

“And this will be done in two phases, one will be through alteration of the constitution and the other one we will embed an Act of Parliament to bring out the modalities to avoid abuses,” Akpabio said.
