In order to achieve good governance and socioeconomic stability in Nigeria, Dr. ChiChi Aniagolu-Okoye, Regional Director of Ford Foundation West Africa, has underlined the need of the rule of law.

Dr. Aniagolu-Okoye, who spoke at the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) 2024 Annual Law Week in Enugu State Chapter, pointed out that bolstering the rule of law can help tackle Nigeria’s present socio-economic problems, including as a slowing GDP growth rate and rising inflation.

Socioeconomic growth is based on the rule of law, according to Dr. Aniagolu-Okoye. “Equality, equity, human rights, and the preservation of fundamental liberties are guaranteed, all of which are critical for drawing in investments, fostering economic expansion, and lowering poverty.”

A society governed by the rule of law is crucial to socio-economic development, which includes social conditions of equality, stable economic growth, access to social services, employment and investment opportunities, guarantee of basic freedoms, and predictability in terms of social order and security. This is because in order to inspire trust in residents and investors to thrive economically, the rules governing business, service delivery, and human relations must be perceived as just and genuine.

Dr. Aniagolu-Okoye also emphasized the vital role that the NBA and attorneys can play in advancing good governance and the rule of law in Nigeria. She exhorted attorneys to take action and hold people in authority responsible.

Dr. Aniagolu-Okoye stated, “The NBA has a distinct opportunity to influence the trajectory of Nigeria’s history.” In order to build a society in which every Nigerian can live with dignity, hope, and prosperity, attorneys should support the rule of law and good administration.
