Before its upcoming congresses, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State has decided to use the consensus option for choosing party officials at the ward, local government, state, and federal levels.
The State Executive Council made the decision on Tuesday at an extended meeting at Government House in Lafia.
The resolution, which permitted non-executive members to take part in the meeting’s discussions, was reportedly the result of a motion made by the party’s legal adviser and backed by Governor Abdullahi Sule.
The action increased the number of stakeholders involved and made it possible for the party to reach a wider consensus when making decisions.
The APC’s state chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bello, then invited Hon. Hassan Abubakar Nalaraba, a member of the state executive and the representative for the Awe/Doma/Keana Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, to formally move the motion on consensus.
“I propose that this enlarged State Executive Council embrace consensus as the preferred method for choosing party representatives at ward, local government, state, and national congresses, as long as it is openly and voluntarily accomplished by all parties involved. Nalaraba remarked, “I really move.”
The APC’s Deputy National Secretary, Prof. Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana (SAN), seconded the resolution.
Senator Abdullahi Adamu, a former governor of Nasarawa State and former National Chairman of the APC, presided over the meeting. A voice vote was then held, and the decision was unanimously approved by the members.
Dr. Bello stated in his opening remarks that the purpose of the gathering was to inform stakeholders and party leaders on recent events inside the APC, especially changes under the new national leadership.
He said that more politicians were defecting to the APC and that the party was still enjoying increasing support throughout the state.
Consensus Will Encourage Peace – Sule Governor Sule applauded the consensus’s ratification, characterizing it as a proactive measure that would aid in averting internal conflicts during the congresses.
“You’ve diminished possible obstacles. The governor declared, “Our congresses will now move forward by consensus, decided by you and brought back to us.”
Additionally, he reaffirmed his dedication to the zoning principle, emphasizing how important it was to his rise to the position of governor and how it has continued to advance political stability in the state.
Additionally, Governor Sule used the occasion to showcase some of his administration’s accomplishments, calling 2025 the most resource-rich year in Nasarawa State’s history.
Prominent party leaders, such as Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Balarabe Abdullahi, members of the National and State Assemblies, current and former government officials, and other important APC stakeholders in the state, were reportedly present at the meeting.
