As Nigeria observes the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has joined millions of Nigerians in paying tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes.
Atiku said in a statement on Thursday that he and his family were joined by Nigerians in a somber recollection and sincere appreciation of the courageous members of the armed forces who have protected the country.
In addition to praising serving people for their bravery, discipline, and steadfast dedication to Nigeria’s security and unity, he paid homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties.
He claims that military personnel’s selflessness, tenacity, and patriotism serve as a continual reminder that the nation’s liberties are safeguarded by their commitment and sacrifice.
Atiku thanked serving and fallen service members for their contributions to the country.
As the country commemorates Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Peter Obi, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), gave a moving tribute to deceased Nigerian troops.
Obi wrote on X that the day was a serious occasion to honor military personnel who gave their lives in defense of their nation.
According to him, the yearly commemoration acts as a prompt for Nigerians to recommit to creating a country deserving of the sacrifices made by its fallen heroes.
Obi asserts that a soldier’s ultimate resting place is not only in their cemetery but also in the hearts and minds of the people they defended, pointing out that while civilians slept soundly, soldiers stood watch at the front lines in inclement weather.
Obi emphasized that living lives that foster harmony, peace, and advancement is the best tribute Nigerians can make to the dead heroes. He also added that leadership must inspire optimism, particularly for the less fortunate.
Additionally, he offered his condolences to the families of the dead soldiers, saying that the day still serves as a sad reminder of their loss but assuring them that their loved ones’ sacrifices were not in vain.
