ASUU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has bemoaned the “selective implementation” of its contract with the federal government.
Professor Christopher Piwuna, the union’s president, made the announcement following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Taraba State University in Jalingo.
ASUU expressed concerns about the FG’s apparent back-and-forth attitude to talks with union officials and issued a strong warning that the government’s continuing hesitation might have “serious consequences on the education sector.”
The union also cautioned that if the Federal Government doesn’t uphold its commitments, it might be subject to another round of statewide strike action.
The union stated, “We, therefore, hope that our expectations and indeed the expectations of Nigerians for a quick and holistic resolution are not dashed.”
The university instructors also accused government representatives of misrepresenting and obstructing the negotiation process.
According to ASUU, “the release of third-party deductions and the partial payment of promotion arrears, dating back to 2017, were described as confidence-boosting exercises rather than solutions to the core issues.”
According to reports, the union and the FG have made headway on some non-financial areas of the agreement, but university instructors stated that salary and working conditions had not been addressed.
