ASUU, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, has explained why it decided to call off its two-week warning strike.
In order to complete the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved concerns impacting the university system, ASUU stated that it wished to give the federal government one month.
According to reports, the suspension was announced on behalf of the varsity employees by ASUU President Prof. Chris Piwuna during a press event in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Piwuna, the National Assembly’s initiatives and ASUU’s fruitful interactions with the Nigerian government led to the decision.
Recall that the national leadership of ASUU convened Tuesday to discuss the organization’s stance on the current member strike.
According to Piwuna, the government’s inaction on repeated requests to settle the ongoing renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and other welfare-related issues prompted the union to launch a warning strike on October 13, 2025.
Additionally, through a team headed by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, the ASUU President alluded to the government’s renewed engagement with the union.
He claimed that while not all problems had been fixed, there had been a noticeable improvement over the pre-strike state of affairs.
Piwuna also praised the Senate Committees on Labour and Tertiary Education and TETFund, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their efforts to promote communication between the two parties.
