To “fix” the crises plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has explained why he was unable to make any decisive decisions.
Atiku claimed that because he was neither the National Chairman nor the National Secretary of the PDP, he was unable to make decisive decisions to improve the party.
In an interview with BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the former vice president claimed that he was unable to mend the party because the PDP’s national chairman and secretary don’t pay attention to him.
During the 2022 campaign for the 2023 presidential election, the PDP’s turmoil began.
The prior ruling party’s national chairman was from the same area, and the party had zoned its presidential ticket to the North.
This resulted in Atiku’s emergency as the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate.
Some party leaders were annoyed by Atiku’s emergency because the party had originally zoned its presidential ticket to the North.
The ongoing crisis caused Atiku and other party members to defect to the African Democratic Congress, or ADC, the opposition group.
But according to Atiku, the government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) is funding certain individuals who want to dismantle the PDP.
If the party’s chairman or secretary had been me or someone who listened to me, I could have made some tough choices to correct the party.
Unfortunately, he noted, “those who hold those positions have a variety of interests that are primarily personal to them.”
