The Benue State All Progressives Congress (APC) has created parallel local government party excos from rival factions commanded by Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume.
This came after the state’s parallel APC Local Government Congresses over the weekend.
Each camp in the exercise, which was held on Saturday across Benue state’s 23 local government areas, claimed to be an actual member of the faction.
Recall that last Wednesday’s separate ward congresses, which resulted in parallel excos, were organized by the factions loyal to the state’s two APC leaders.
The battle for the APC’s survival in Benue State, however, now rests with President Bola Tinubu and Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, the party’s national chairman, to decide.
President Tinubu and Prof. Yilwatda, the party’s national chairman, will make the final decision about the Benue congresses and parallel exco lists, according to supporters of the two APC camps in the state.
In response to the local government congresses, James Ornguga, the APC State Organising Secretary and a supporter of Governor Alia, said that any congress held in Benue State without the consent and support of the party’s national working committee (NWC) was pointless and a waste of time, adding that their own congress was “equally peaceful and credible.”
Loyal to Akume, APC State Publicity Secretary Dan-Morgan Ihomun claimed in a statement over the weekend that the non-elective congresses were peaceful, transparent, and well-organized. The All Progressives Congress (APC), Benue State Chapter, would like to thank party members in all 23 Local Government Areas for the remarkable attendance in the Local Government Congresses on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
The state’s non-elective congresses conducted itself in an orderly, peaceful, and transparent manner, demonstrating the party’s strong organizational capacity, discipline, and unity. Participants’ overwhelming turnout demonstrates their ongoing faith in the APC’s principles and leadership in Benue State.
The statement went on to say, “We congratulate all current Local Government Party Executives who were officially confirmed to serve another four-year term by their respective Congresses.
“The party members’ faith in you and your administration are amply supported by this reaffirmation. As you take on this extended mandate, you are urged to continue being transparent, inclusive, and dedicated to bolstering the party’s grassroots infrastructure in accordance with our great party’s constitution and core values.
Sen. Dr. George Akume, CON, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Leader of the APC in Benue State and the North Central Zone, is greatly appreciated by the party for his steady leadership, direction, and stabilizing influence. The party in the state still benefits from his dedication and experience, which provide it direction.
