Bode George, a former chairman of the board of trustees and party chieftain, has confirmed that strategic efforts are being made to secure a southern presidential candidate amid mounting tension over the PDP’s (Peoples Democratic Party) zoning arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to an interview with George, the party is quietly forming an alliance around respectable southern leaders who could represent the PDP against President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The process of selecting a Southerner to be the party’s presidential flagbearer is underway, George reportedly said.
Politics is not a closed system. We are having a meeting this week, which could be considered a “make or break” meeting.

George and other Southern PDP leaders support moving the presidential ticket to the South, but some members of the National Executive Committee are still against it, claiming that the party should put electability and internal cohesion ahead of regional concerns.
Although George admitted that there were zoning disputes, he emphasized the value of discretion and timing in identifying possible candidates.
There are already arrangements in place, he said, and there are a number of trustworthy, accountable, and morally upright individuals who have been tried and tested.

The development occurs as the PDP struggles with an unstable internal environment after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar left and a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress emerged.
