In a case contesting President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, the Supreme Court reserved judgment on Tuesday.
Following the parties’ last presentations, a seven-member Supreme Court panel presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro rendered the ruling.
The apex court will notify the parties concerned of the date of the decision.
The Attorneys General of ten states are the plaintiffs in this case, and the Federal Government and the National Assembly are the defendants.
Delta State, the fifth plaintiff, chose to drop out of the case during Tuesday’s proceedings. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the federal government’s attorney, did not challenge this ruling.
Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), the plaintiffs’ attorney, stressed in his submission that the action does not contest the President’s right to declare a state of emergency.
Instead, the lawsuit challenges the declaration’s reach, he told the court, especially in relation to how it affects the governor’s, deputy governor’s, and State House of Assembly’s roles.
