A clash between agberos, or road transport workers, and followers of a local traditional ruler on Sunday sparked violence in the Alaba Rago neighborhood of Iba, Lagos State.

A pedestrian, who has not yet been identified, was killed amid the disturbances when a speeding car struck him.

A new motor park in the area, purportedly created by the monarch to accommodate cars heading to northern and eastern Nigeria, was reportedly opened shortly after the incident. As a threat to their authority over the park system and local revenue collection, the facility, which was opened over the weekend, is said to have caused friction among current transport workers.

Locals say the altercation started early on Sunday and grew more intense as the two groups fought each other close to the recently built park. A pedestrian was fatally injured when an oncoming car struck him while he was trying to cross the street during the altercation. On the spot, the victim passed away.

Local sources shared footage from the scene, which showed a disturbing scene with worried residents gathered around the body. A wrapper was used by onlookers to hide the remains in one of the videos.

The Lagos State Police Command responded to the disturbances by confirming that tranquilizing measures had been implemented. According to police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, the state’s Commissioner of Police assessed the situation on the spot and met with the parties involved the next day at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

As per the police, there are continuous attempts to mediate a settlement and stop the conflict from getting worse.
