To give Nigerians the impression that it is genuinely combating terrorism and insurgency in the nation, former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung has urged the Federal Government to make the names of terrorists’ sponsors public.
In a statement released on Thursday, the politician from Plateau State who made the demand charged that the Nigerian government has continually failed to identify or bring charges against those who sponsor and finance terrorism in the nation, despite several assurances and growing evidence that it claims to have obtained.
Dalung wrote in the statement that the government has begun using half-truths and diversions rather than taking clear action quickly.
Dalung cited recent remarks made by Yusuf Gagdi, the U.S. representative for the Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, who strongly opposed the establishment of a state police. Gagdi’s position and the government’s unwillingness to identify and bring charges against terror sponsors were deemed hypocritical and ridiculous.
He emphasized how attacks, kidnappings, murders, and relocation have occurred even in Gagdi’s own Plateau State constituency, with no accountability coming after.
Dalung contested Gagdi’s claim that state police cannot be trusted by governors, claiming that the security system under the jurisdiction of the federal government has not performed any better.
Additionally, Dalung recalled claims that a number of public personalities were sponsors of terrorists and questioned why the DSS had not invited the fingered individuals to be questioned.
Dalung stated, “There is no record that Senator Shehu Buba of Bauchi South was invited by the DSS, despite media reports accusing him of aiding terrorists.”
Additionally, he asserted that NSA Nuhu Ribadu has not been detained or charged despite multiple accusations of bandit backing from former Kaduna State Governor Nasiru El-Rufai.
The former minister added that Gen. Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff, had earlier pledged to make the names of funders public, but that pledge had not been kept.
Although the accusations have not been published or prosecuted, other incidents, such as the alleged submission of Nigerian terrorist sponsors’ identities to the government by the United Arab Emirates, are still recent.
The breaking point in Nigeria is approaching. Nigeria runs the risk of experiencing further insecurity, dislocation, and a decline in public faith in the government unless names are made public, prosecutions are started, and constitutional reforms—like A’s state and community policing—are implemented, he underlined.
