Delta Airlines reportedly rerouted its Lagos-Atlanta flight to Accra on Tuesday due to a fire incident, according to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
NCAA’s director of consumer protection and public affairs, Michael Achimugu, stated in a post on X on Thursday that the diversion happened after an aircraft oven fire.
He said that the crew had gone over their allotted rest period by the time the matter was settled, which prevented the flight from continuing.
Achimugu stated that more customers were rebooked on the airline’s Accra-New York route on Wednesday night after other passengers were rebooked on the same evening.
Today, September 25, 2025, at around 1200 hours, “Flight DL055 LOS – ATL finally departed from Accra.”
The director also confirmed the cancellation of Delta’s Thursday arrival flight from Atlanta to Lagos.
He claimed that travelers were properly notified and that hotel accommodations were given to those who arrived at the airport.
“Some passengers would be airlifted on British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa Airlines, while twenty-three passengers had been rebooked on Air France,” he continued.
“Tomorrow, September 26, 2025, at 1140 hours, the airline’s scheduled flight is due to depart with the remaining passengers.
“As anticipated, the Air France flight has not been canceled; it will depart at 01:30 hours.”
Wishing the travelers a safe journey, Achimugu stated that follow-up activities are still being conducted.
