Facts have emerged on how a police officer attached to the chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Inspector O. O. Ojonogba of PMF 51, was killed by gunmen.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when the attackers stormed the council chairman’s residence.

The officer, popularly known as “Ade,” was shot in the neck in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, by yet-to-be-identified gunmen while on duty.

At the time of the attack, the chairman was said to have travelled to Asaba, the state capital, on official engagement, leaving behind his wife and children with the late officer.

Inspector Ojonogba, who was on duty, was reportedly asleep in his lounge when the assailants shot him. On the fateful day, the chairman had travelled with three other security men, leaving behind the late police officer.

The Special Assistant on Security to the chairman, Mr Obasanjo Zokumor, confirmed: “At about 3 to 4 am, armed robbers entered the council chairman’s compound after breaking through the generator powerhouse while it was on.

“Immediately after gaining entrance, they went to the room of the security personnel who was sleeping and shot him in the neck in his sleep.

“After which they went through the back of the main house, destroyed one of the burglary protectors, entered through the dining section and went straight to the children’s room.

“At the children’s room, they demanded their father’s money and jewellery from their mother with gun shots at the POP ceiling and the wall of the room.

“They took all their phones, two iPads and a laptop. They returned to search for more gadgets, but they did not find any.”

The armed men reportedly fled the scene afterwards, leaving residents in shock.

When contacted, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, said the command was combing everywhere to arrest the criminals while still trying to get confirmation.
