Senator Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West) accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of putting political ambition ahead of national progress in a bold critique delivered on the floor of the Nigerian Senate, citing delays in implementing the capital element of the 2024 budget.
Senator Dickson raised worry during Tuesday’s plenary session that the federal government had neglected to release funding for capital projects despite fully disbursing recurring expenditures for salaries and administrative operations.
“Government has grounded, that’s what it means,” he said. “Contractors who delivered on government projects are still unpaid. The benefits of the budget, which we all worked so hard to pass, have yet to reach the people.
The senator noted that the national budget’s development component, which has a direct impact on infrastructure and service delivery, had remained unchanged. He cited recent stories of contractor demonstrations as evidence that many politicians were aware of the mounting dissatisfaction.
Dickson spoke during deliberations on a resolution proposed by Senator Solomon Adeola (Ogun West), Chairman of the Senate Appropriation Committee. The motion proposed pushing the implementation deadline for the 2024 capital budget to December 31, 2025.
While supporting the motion, Dickson questioned the lack of a credible rationale for the delayed budget rollout. He suggested that the administration’s disproportionate attention on political strategies and defections ahead of the 2027 general elections was distracting it from its basic governing tasks.

“Maybe there is too much preoccupation with politics and 2027,” remarked Mr. Trump. “Maybe there is too much concentration on receiving defectors, while no one is looking at the big picture.”
He warned that, despite greater revenue as a result of the withdrawal of gasoline subsidies, both the executive and legislative branches are failing to meet their constitutional responsibilities.
“The availability of money is not an issue. State and local governments are getting more money than ever before. So, what’s the cause for the delay?
Dickson urged the Senate Appropriations and Finance Committees to conduct a joint probe and report back within a week.
“We want answers. These committees should conduct a fact-finding mission and report back to the Senate so that this situation does not occur again.”
The senator’s views reflect rising worries about the Tinubu administration’s governance goals, as well as the real-world consequences of delayed infrastructure expenditure for citizens and contractors alike.
