Douye Diri, the governor of Bayelsa State, has declared that he will not force Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, his deputy, to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Diri, who resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15 and formally joined the APC on November 3, stated that he values communication and understanding over political pressure.
Speaking on Wednesday during the State Executive Council meeting at Yenagoa’s Government House, Diri responded to persistent rumors in the media regarding his deputy’s political views.
“Let me address an issue that has been the subject of speculation in the media,” he stated. Instead of pressuring people to join the APC, my goal is to persuade them to agree with me. I may be in a position of power today, but not tomorrow.
He continued by saying that while it is still difficult for a governor and his deputy to be members of opposing political parties, talks between him and Ewhrudjakpo were continuing and producing fruitful outcomes.
For the governor to be on one side and the deputy on the other is truly challenging. However, we’ll keep talking, and tomorrow we might be at the same party,” he remarked.
Court Case Retracted Following Reconciliation, Governor Diri also verified that Ewhrudjakpo had dropped the lawsuit he had brought at the Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from impeaching him for his reluctance to defect.
The governor claims that the two leaders had private conversations and mutual understanding before coming to this decision.
He emphasized that his administration places a higher priority on stability and peace than on political conflict.
“We have to keep the politics cool. Violence in Bayelsa State is over. As brothers, we are one. He said, “Politics should be used to advance the state, not to pit people against one another.
Diri urged locals to maintain their composure in the face of allegations that armed men were purportedly entering the state.
He gave assurances that security services had been notified and could handle any real threats.
“Bayelsa is still among the safest states in the nation. Instead of disseminating lies on social media, our people should disclose security concerns to the appropriate authorities, he suggested.
Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, the Commissioner for Health, gave Diri an award from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum acknowledging Bayelsa as the “Best State in Health Insurance Service Delivery” during the executive meeting.
In a same vein, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria awarded the governor a “Distinguished Governor Award for Outstanding Support to SWAN and Contribution to Sports Development in Nigeria” through Commissioner for Sports Dr. Daniel Igali.
