Ned Nwoko, the senator for Delta North, recently resigned from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but the Senate has acknowledged this.
According to a report, Nwoko explained his decision to change allegiance by pointing to the PDP’s internal problems and growing instability in a letter that was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. He emphasized that the party’s current situation threatened his political future.
A vibrant opposition is necessary to protect Nigeria’s political landscape and guarantee a fair democratic process, the senator added, urging the Senate to form an ad hoc committee to look into the continuing turmoil inside the PDP.
Ned Nwoko was led to the majority wing of the Upper Chamber following the announcement, to roaring cheers.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused Senator Ned Nwoko of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he was afraid of not getting the PDP’s governorship ticket in 2027, according to Fred Oghenesivbe, the advisor to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Oghenesivbe, the Director General of the Delta State Orientation and Communication Bureau, made the assertion in response to Nwoko’s defection on Sunday in Asaba.
By sending a letter of resignation to his Ward 8 Chairman in the Aniocha North Local Government Area last Friday, Nwoko formally departed the PDP.

According to the letter, which was dated January 30, 2025, the lawmaker’s departure was due to irreconcilable factionalization and severe differences.
But Oghenesivbe rejected Nwoko’s explanation for quitting the PDP, claiming that his departure was a deliberate attempt to maintain his political standing before 2027.
