On Wednesday, Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami team lost 3-0 against FC Cincinnati, ending his record-breaking run of games with multiple goals. During the run, Inter achieved four victories and a draw. The 38-year-old Argentine star forward had scored two goals in five straight games for Miami, giving him 16 goals for the season. Messi had not scored a brace or more in five straight games since he joined Barcelona in 2012.
Cincinnati, however, limited Miami to just two shots on goal during the match.
Javier Mascherano, the head coach of Inter Miami, acknowledged through a translator that his team was clearly outplayed from the start of the game today.
We found it quite challenging to prevail in the individual duels. The fact that we physically bring a lot of hustle and bustle and ultimately pay for it could be one of the causes.

Although Inter Miami still has three games left against both teams, they would need to win them all to pass their opponents for the league lead.

To join Miami, De Paul
According to a source familiar with the talks, Inter Miami and Atletico Madrid player Rodrigo De Paul have reached an agreement, AFP reported on Wednesday.
The contract is for the next four seasons, with De Paul playing for Miami on loan from Atletico Madrid for the rest of 2025, with a more than $12 million buyout option for Inter after that.
On July 30, De Paul might make his Miami debut against Atlas of Mexico in Inter’s first Leagues Cup encounter, which pits MLS against Mexican League teams.
After four seasons in Madrid, he will depart Europe to join his countryman Messi eleven months prior to the World Cup, which the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host.
If Messi will participate in the World Cup, he has not stated.

Messi’s contract with Inter expires at the end of this year, and a reunion with De Paul, who was a teammate on Argentina’s 2022 World Cup winning squad, might persuade Messi to sign a new term.
For the 2026 season, when Inter will erect a new stadium in Miami, the team wants Messi to stay.
The 31-year-old DePaul joins a core group of Miami that also includes Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets of Spain, and Uruguayan Luis Suarez.
On Wednesday, Charlotte was selected to host the 2026 MLS All-Star Game. Next Wednesday in Austin, Texas, the MLS All-Stars will play the Mexican League All-Stars in this year’s all-star showdown.
