Professors at Nigerian public universities will now earn a monthly top-up of N140,000, according to Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa.
Alausa revealed this information on Wednesday when answering questions during an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” show.
He was discussing the deal that the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, were unable to reach on Wednesday.
President Tinubu has established a new type of allowance for academic professionals called the “professorial cadre” allowance, an improved extra package that will give a professor a monthly top-up of more than N140,000.
“Today, we have the money to support both the nine improved Earned Academic Allowances, which are now well-structured, and the 40% wage boost given to our teachers across all of our institutions.
“The implementation aspects of agreements are what make them beautiful, not the moment they are signed.
“We have already begun implementation before today. Between December 20 and 30, the chairman of the National Salary Income and Wages Commission worked several hours at night to secure the publishing of the circular supporting the agreement’s viewers’ welfare component.
“That circular has been released, and the president didn’t say he wouldn’t give any go-ahead to go and sign an agreement he knows he won’t implement,” Alausa stated during the negotiation process.
