According to the Federal Government, improper farming methods by certain farmers are to blame for the onion crisis plaguing Nigeria’s market.
After meeting with the Nigerian National Onion Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association (NOPPMAN) on Monday, Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, reportedly said as much.
In light of the concerning indications that there could be a 40% shortfall in onion production this season due mostly to the distribution of tainted seeds to farmers, he said the meeting was informal but essential.
Investigations revealed that a NOPPMAN member was in charge of delivering inferior seeds to marketplaces, according to Kyari.

“The association deserves praise for taking a proactive stance in addressing this matter by identifying the offender and turning him over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for examination and responsibility.

He stated, “We discussed and agreed on immediate and long-term solutions to mitigate the impact of this crisis, including the urgent distribution of high-quality seeds and fertilizers to affected farmers.”

According to the Agriculture Minister, the government intends to build state-of-the-art onion storage facilities in order to lower post-harvest loss.

“That would help ensure sufficiency and address the high cost of the product,” he stated.

Our plans to build state-of-the-art storage facilities are also being expedited in order to minimize post-harvest losses and guarantee a steady supply for the market. Innovative approaches to improve onion preservation were also investigated, including the use of rice straws for packaging and better cold storage methods.

Given the short-term market effects of the onion scarcity, we are giving warehouses top priority in order to hold available harvests and guarantee effective distribution. “These actions will contribute to price and supply stability in the upcoming months,” he said.
