The capital of Abia State, Umuahia, was totally grounded on Monday as citizens abstained from their regular activities in support of the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration led by activist Omoyele Sowore.
Vanguard reported that only a handful of cars and tricycles were visible traveling across the city, leaving the normally busy streets empty.
The capital was almost silent as stores, banks, gas stations, marketplaces, and parking lots stayed closed. Additionally, neither public nor private schools were able to start classes.
Due to the planned demonstration, some schools sent out letters to parents over the weekend telling them not to bring their kids to school on Monday.
No vendors were visible at the well-known Isigate market, where tables and stalls were covered. Important intersections like FMC/Bank Road, Uwakala Road, and Post Office/Abia Tower were also deserted.
Along Uwakala Road, a group of combined security patrol vans was seen, presumably in order to keep an eye on events.
