The termination of 900 employees of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDC) has been considered the pinnacle of unfairness and lawlessness by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Thus, the NLC called for the quick and complete reinstatement of all impacted employees, threatening to stage more widespread demonstrations against the distribution company if it did not comply.It pointed out that there is no excuse for such a bag.
Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, clarified the congress’s stance in a statement on Thursday.The recent industrial action was linked to a personnel reorganization plan, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Kaduna Electric’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Abdullahi Abdulazeez. The business further denied any rumors or false information pertaining to the matter.
In order to secure the company’s long-term survival, the statement also stated that Kaduna Electric’s management has started a comprehensive reform process.
Contrary to labor union claims about the effect on 900 workers, the corporation verified that “services no longer required” notices were sent only to individuals working for the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission corporation of Nigeria (TCN).
The NLC urged all of its affiliates in Kaduna State to show sympathy with the workers’ ongoing protest.
KEDC’s decision was questioned in the statement, “Come Off Your High Horse,” which claimed that it violated redundancy and due process regulations.
“Despite repeated provocation by KEDC’s management, we applaud the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company protesting workers for carrying out their strike action peacefully,” the statement said.
The impacted workers have already started a protest, which the NLC referred to as a “heroic struggle against illegality and injustice.”
“We implore Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company management to change their unyielding position and have a constructive conversation. The statement went on to say that unconditionally rehiring the fired employees will promote workplace peace and restore necessary services.
Stricter measures would be used if the KEDC does not change its mind, the NLC warned.

The NLC said, “We are first urging all of our affiliates in Kaduna State to participate in the demonstration in solidarity.”
