House of Representatives to adjourn plenary session until July 7, 2026
The speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas made the announcement on Thursday, it was reported.
He said the adjournment is to mark the end of the legislative year and give room for the legislators to review other constitutional amendment proposals which will be the first item they vote on after their recess.
He said the break would allow lawmakers to return to their constituencies and meet their constituents.
Before the adjournment, the House of Representatives on Thursday passed the State Police Bill after a decisive vote during plenary on the legislative proposal.
The bill reportedly gained support from 289 lawmakers, while four members voted against it, according to the chamber’s proceedings.
The development came as the House earlier ruled that voting on the bill should be done manually during the consideration of important legislative items.
The chamber was made up of 290 members for the day’s legislative business.
The bill, which would establish a state-level policing structure, remains one of the most closely watched security reform proposals before the National Assembly.
Earlier in the plenary, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the new Minority Leader of the 10th House of Representatives, Hon. Fred Agbedi from Bayelsa.
Speaker Tajudeen announced the new principal officers just after settling down for the day’s business.
Also named is Sokoto State lawmaker, Abdusamad Dasuki as Deputy Minority Leader. Bauchi State representative, Mansur Manu Soro, has been appointed Minority Chief Whip.
Fred Agbedi is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Mansur Manu is of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM); and Abdusamad Dasuki is of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
