Before the 2027 general elections, Kabiru Turaki, the new factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been tasked by Nigeria’s former Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), with starting a true party reconstruction and making up for previous mistakes.

When Turaki and a few members of the PDP National Working Committee paid Babangida a courtesy call at his hilltop home in Minna, Niger State, Babangida took the lead.

The discussion was believed to have concentrated on party rejuvenation, national stability and the building of political organizations across the country.

IBB commended the PDP leadership for standing in solidarity with the Niger State administration and populace throughout what he called one of their most trying times.

He stressed that the PDP remained “the most structurally grounded political organisation in Nigeria,” recalling his own attempt to institutionalise a two-party system, an experiment he said was rebuffed by the political elite at the time.

The former military president advised Turaki to prioritise tact, extensive engagement and inclusive leadership as he begins reforming the party.

“While you spoke earlier, you admitted that the party made mistakes and has already set machinery in motion to correct them. I implore you to be tactful, ask people what they think, and try to create a party that is progressive and peaceful. You have the capacity to achieve it, and I wish you well,” he said.

Babangida described how a military administrator he once placed in Niger State encountered a local who swore his allegiance remained with President Shehu Shagari and the then-ruling NPN, ignorant that a military government was in place, in order to highlight the lasting effect of political parties.

He claimed the experience illustrated how firmly party institutions are rooted in communal consciousness.

In response, Turaki expressed gratitude to the former head of state for his unwavering leadership and stated that the PDP would keep utilizing his leadership expertise and historical knowledge of Nigeria’s political development.

Before 2027, Turaki stated, “We are dedicated to resetting this party, strengthening its organs, and restoring its winning spirit.”

He continued by saying that although the group had originally intended to make a particular visit of appreciation, the recent kidnappings in Niger State necessitated combining the call with a visit of condolence.
