Obi Aguocha, the House of Representatives member for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, has said that his constant calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the troubled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have come at a high personal and political cost.
Aguocha said he had lost money and been unfairly labeled because of his stance, but he stood by his actions.
“I know what I’ve lost as a member of the House of Representatives for speaking up for Nnamdi Kanu and other constitutional issues,” he said.
The lawmaker said that because he keeps fighting for what he believes in, some people have called him names and pushed him to the side.
“I know what I’m losing now because they have marked me as ‘okay he is always on this side,’ but I don’t regret it at all,” Aguocha said.
He said that his stance was based on his beliefs and a desire for justice.
Aguocha also said that Kanu had given him the only job of negotiating his release, calling the move a sign of trust.
He said that the approval shows how much faith the detained IPOB leader has in his work.
The federal lawmaker also said that some leaders in the South-East were wrong for not talking about Kanu’s detention and other problems that the Igbo people are facing.
He asked leaders in the area to be more brave and work together to solve problems that need to be solved right away.
Aguocha told Igbo leaders to follow the example set by Yoruba leaders in getting Sunday Igboho released.
He stressed how important it was for everyone to work together to get the same results for Kanu.
The lawmaker did, however, praise Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, for getting South-East governors to work together to push for Kanu’s release.
He said that the move was a good thing that could help get more people on board.
Aguocha also talked about future political races. He said that Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, would not be able to beat Otti in the 2027 governorship election.
