Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has said that he has nothing to do with supporting violence or terrorist activities.
On Thursday, Prince Bashir Adefaka, who is in charge of the Sultan’s media team, warned an American named Mac Arnold not to make false and baseless claims against the traditional ruler, who is also the Leader of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
The statement said that Mac Arnold has made a number of false and sensational claims about the Sultan and his office in order to get people’s attention.
But it said that the claims are false, misleading, and not backed up by any credible evidence.
The Sultan told the American citizen to stop making such claims, but he also said that he would take legal action under both Nigerian and international law if the person kept making such rude comments.
“The Media Team of Sultan of Sokoto His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar CFR, mni, who is the Leader of the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria, has been made aware of recent video claims and statements made by an American commentator, Mac Arnold.”
“For some time, we have been carefully watching a number of claims and comments made by this person that seem to be aimed at getting attention by making sensational and unproven claims against the Sultan and his office.
“We firmly deny these claims, especially those that suggest any kind of involvement in violence or terrorism. They are false, misleading, and not backed up by credible evidence.” People have made similar accusations in the past, and they have been widely disputed and rejected as divisive stories that can make tensions worse.
“The Sultan of Sokoto is still a respected national and religious leader who works to bring people of different faiths together and promote peace in Nigeria and around the world.”
So, we don’t think it’s necessary to give these claims more attention. We do, however, ask that people and the international community be careful, check information from reliable sources, and not share content that could hurt social cohesion.
