Salihu Tanko Yakasai, a former Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) candidate for governor, has accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to establish a one-party system in Kano State.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday, Yakasai made the accusation and cautioned that the concept is a grave mistake.
He said Kano’s political history shows that from the era of the defunct Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) to the period known as “Santsi da Tabo,” the state has never been under a one-party system, and that it was unlikely to change.
“Kano is not Lagos,” said Yakasai, a former media assistant to former All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
He clarified that the principles that the late Aminu Kano established—public interest, truth, and ideological commitment—are the foundation of Kano’s politics. He claims that opposition in Kano is necessary to guarantee societal advancement, responsible governance, justice, and accountability rather than for its own sake.
Yakasai also voiced concern over what he called the disregard for Kano State residents’ grievances, specifically the claims of unequal government appointments and the preference for some areas in development initiatives.
He maintained that the public would not support such measures.
He emphasized that devotion to leadership is not gained by compulsion, political manipulation, or deceit, but rather by justice and excellent governance.
Finally, he issued a warning, saying that the people of Kano would take action at the elections in 2027 if they were still denied their proper development.
