The Kano State Police Command has stepped up its efforts to prevent automobile theft in the state, recovering an abandoned Rav-4 and apprehending a suspected car thief.
On January 6, 2025, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer, released a statement that included this information.
The statement states that on December 28, 2024, the State Criminal Investigation Department’s (SCID) Anti-Car Theft Unit conducted a patrol along Kwanar Ungogo in the Ungogo Local Government Area and found the vehicle, an ash-colored Rav-4 with registration number YAB 881 JK (Abuja), abandoned.
After initial inquiries, the main suspect, 40-year-old Bala Sani from Katsina State’s Funtua Local Government Area, was captured on January 4, 2025, at his home in Kwado Quarters, Katsina LGA.
The suspect admitted, according to the police, to planning with a co-conspirator to take the car from Zaria, Kaduna State.
He acknowledged that he had driven the car to Kano with the goal of selling it. But he left the car and ran away to his hometown when he saw police officers close to Ungogo Junction, the police said.
The police are presently holding the recovered vehicle while they conduct an investigation.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa stated, “Once our investigation is complete, the suspect will be charged in court.”
The legitimate owner of the car has been urged by the Kano State Police Command to present identification.

Police Commissioner Salman Dogo Garba advised the people to be on guard and praised the Anti-Car Theft Unit for their prompt action.
