13 people were killed and seven villages were burned down in what appears to have been a retaliation attack by suspected Lakurawa terrorists on Sunday, March 9, 2025, in Birnin Dede village in Kebbi State.
According to Malam Umar, a local, the attackers deliberately targeted the villages around Birnin Dede, which are all located in Kebbi State’s Arewa Local Government Area.
He claimed that a group of security forces in the area had recently killed their leader, Maigemu, and that this prompted the attack.
Only one community, which was protected by the military, was uninjured when the attackers set fire to several others. Umar told Vanguard over the phone, “We beseech Allah for protection from this terrifying group.”
The event reportedly happened after the Kebbi State Government carried out a security operation in which renowned terrorist leader Maigemu was slain.
As part of the state’s continuous attempts to reduce violent incidents, Governor Nasir Idris supported the operation.
