Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is about to become the chairman of the “one-man” Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors Forum, according to the Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Saturday.

The APC’s state branch spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, stated that it is now evident that the PDP is in its “final throes of relevance.”

According to Oladejo, the opposition has lost any remaining credibility and structure as a result of the continuous flow of PDP governors defecting to the APC.

“Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State now stands on the brink of emerging as the de facto Chairman of a “one-man PDP Governors Forum”—a development that perfectly captures the depth of the party’s collapse,” Oladejo wrote in a statement he signed. What was once a platform for group leadership has become a solitary outpost with diminishing power.

To put it bluntly, this is rejection rather than happenstance. The PDP’s leadership, lack of ideological clarity, and persistent incapacity to handle internal problems are all directly reflected in the continuous departure of governors and important stakeholders. The people who are most familiar with the party are leaving.

“A political party cannot—and should not—be entrusted with the governing of a complex country like Nigeria if it is unable to maintain order, loses its own elected leaders, and provides no clear direction. In addition to being a failure, the PDP’s current situation serves as a warning.

The wider implications for Nigeria’s democracy are even more concerning. Ego conflicts, a lack of discipline, and an unprepared obsession with power are all contributing factors to the downfall of responsible opposition politics. Nigerians should have an opposition that is prepared, organized, and credible rather than one that is collapsing right now.

It is imperative that opposition parties take a cue from the APC’s tried-and-true strategy during its years in opposition, which were marked by selflessness, fortitude, discipline, and strategic patience.

“The APC gained legitimacy, established trust, and offered Nigerians a convincing alternative; it did not stumble into power.” That route is still accessible, but it takes effort rather than shortcuts.

Rather, the opposition of today appears to be caught in a vicious circle of opportunism, where individual aspirations take precedence over group goals and the quest for power has evolved from a means to an end.

In Lagos State, the APC promised to stay disciplined, forward-thinking, and focused.

“In the interest of all Nigerians, we continue to consolidate on progressive governance, deliver quantifiable results, and strengthen democratic institutions while others scatter and self-destruct.”
