The Archbishop of the Methodist Church Nigeria Lagos, Most Rev Isaac Ayo Olawuyi, has urged for the election of a Muslim governor in Lagos State in 2027.

He noted that by then, Christians would have held the governorship for 12 years in a row.

This statement was made at the Lagos House of Assembly’s 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Service, titled ‘The Voice of Mercy.’

In a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, the Archbishop stressed the importance of religious tolerance, implying that it is time for a Muslim to govern Lagos.

He emphasized that Akinwunmi Ambode and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, both Christians, would have finished this 12-year span, with Sanwo-Olu completing his maximum eight years and Ambode serving only one term from 2015 to 2019 due to a falling out with his political mentor.

The Archbishop added, “It will be 12 years in 2027 since we have been in the system together, and we have had Christians as rulers. Now is the time to offer our Muslim brothers the opportunity to rule Lagos State.”

It should be noted that Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola, both Muslims, served as governors of Lagos State between 1999 and 2015.
