The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has denounced the “devilish” crime and called for the immediate security of hospitals and health institutions in the wake of the blasts in Maiduguri that killed many people.
Remember that the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital was the site of one of the bombings?
Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, the association’s president, called the Monday night incident “tragic, barbaric, and unacceptable” in a statement released on Tuesday.
The fact that one of the explosions took place on the grounds of UMTH, the biggest tertiary medical center in North-East Nigeria, particularly upset NARD.
“Hospitals are hallowed places designed to promote healing, hope, and life preservation. It is distressing and intolerable to see such a location attacked by violent activities, according to the association.
While praising resident physicians, medical and dental students, and other healthcare professionals for their bravery and professionalism in reacting quickly to treat explosion victims, it expressed relief that none of its members at UMTH were injured during the tragedy.
The group also praised UMTH’s management for their prompt leadership and coordination during the emergency.
NARD expressed sympathy to the families of the victims impacted by the disaster, as well as to the Borno State administration and populace.
It urged the federal government and security services to bolster the security framework surrounding medical facilities, particularly in areas that are vulnerable and affected by violence.
Additionally, the group promoted enhanced security, better surveillance, and the strategic placement of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units near UMTH and other important sites.
