Daniel Daga, a Nigerian midfielder, was found guilty of performing a sexual act without consent by a Norwegian court and given a six-month prison sentence.
The verdict against Molde FK player Daniel Daga, 19, was handed down on Tuesday afternoon, March 10. The Nigerian football player was also forced to pay 10,000 Norwegian kroner in legal fees by the court.
According to TV 2 Norway in Norway, the decision was in line with the punishment that the prosecution had asked for.
According to Daga’s attorney, Astrid Bolstad, the player was taken aback by the ruling and maintains that he did nothing improper.
“He is really unhappy with the decision. Bolstad told TV 2, “He thinks he is innocent and everything happened with consent.”
The midfielder intends to appeal the ruling, she confirmed.
“At this time, the decision is not legally binding. Bolstad stated, “He should be treated like anyone else until the case is finalized,” noting that Daga has been training regularly in recent weeks.
Molde acknowledged that the player will not be chosen for games while the legal process is ongoing and called the situation challenging in a statement released later on Tuesday.
“Everyone concerned is facing an extremely challenging situation. Molde Football Club stated, “As an employer, we have a duty to care for our employees in a responsible manner while also having a great deal of respect for the seriousness of the case and the burden it places on all affected parties.”
“The club has determined that the player will not be included in the matchday squad until further notice due to the circumstances and the ongoing legal proceedings.”
According to reports, Molde had said in December that Daga would temporarily refrain from practicing and playing as the case proceeded through the legal system.
Prior to the 2025 season, the midfield player joined the Norwegian team, where he played in 15 games and scored three goals.
After previous stints at FC One Rocket and Dakkada FC, Daga played in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with Enyimba FC prior to moving to Europe.
He was the youngest player picked in Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and played football for the country’s under-20 team.
Daga received recognition for his efforts throughout the tournament and started every game for Nigeria until the squad was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the South Korean national under-20 football team.
