In advance of the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) national convention, the North-Central APC Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu to make sure that the party elects reputable national officers.
March 27 and 28, 2026, are the dates set for the APC national conference. The convention will pick the party’s national officers, who will make up the National Working Committee (NWC).
Nonetheless, the North-Central APC Forum said in a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, on Thursday that the party must start consultations to choose eminent individuals with experience and a track record to succeed the national chairman and all other NWC positions.
To ensure that only individuals with the necessary skills are elected at the convention to lead the APC’s affairs, the Forum urged Tinubu to lead a “vetting process.”
“A proper APC national chairman should be somebody whose age accords him the status of a statesman, not an inexperienced fellow who has not acquired the experience to manage the affairs of a political party with so many prominent, distinguished personalities,” the Forum claims.
The Forum emphasized that having a skilled leadership to manage the party’s business is now a must due to the APC’s explosive development after a number of opposition governors switched to the party with their structures.
“At the next national convention, President Bola Tinubu is being urged by the North-Central All Progressives Congress, APC, Forum to secure the election of a viable national leadership for the party.
“We think this goal is crucial since the APC is a party with many well-known politicians who have served and continue to serve at the highest levels of government. We think it should be imperative to elect the best candidates from such a prestigious pool of political leaders.
“We ask Mr. President to lead the screening process to make sure the appropriate people become our party’s national officers because there should be no justification for not getting it right at the national convention.
APC leadership should be composed of distinguished individuals who possess the necessary attributes, including age, prior leadership experience, track record, national acceptance, a broad and efficient network, and resources.
“We implore Mr. President to make sure that all of the National Working Committee’s (NWC) seats are filled by qualified candidates. The message read, “We don’t want people who will commercialize the party by only looking out for their personal interests.”
Academic credentials shouldn’t be a primary criterion in choosing the party’s national head, the APC Forum said. The North-Central APC Forum stated that capacities and political sagacity are more crucial attributes.
The Forum insisted on competence and stated that candidates should not be taken into consideration if they had previously failed to deliver their local governments, wards, and polling places for the party.
The APC Forum emphasized that religious sentiment should also be abandoned.
“Leading APC has little to do with grammar or the length of your educational background. We are urging Mr. President to ensure that only individuals with a track record of success, who are of the appropriate age and experience, are elected as APC national officers. This is because it all comes down to ability to deliver.
“At the national convention, we also recommend that religious factors not be taken into account when choosing the APC’s national chairman. Since Nigeria is a secular society, it is crucial that the national chairman of the APC not be someone with a reputation for having strong religious beliefs or who believes he is speaking for Christians, Muslims, or followers of traditional religions.
“Mr. President, please make sure that the national chairman does not prioritize religion.” The statement went on, “The national chairman should be someone who is not sectional, who identifies with people of all faiths and ethnicities, and who will put the interest of Nigeria above all.”
