The African Democratic Congress (ADC) was adopted because it reflects the realities of contemporary Nigerian politics, according to Elisha Abbo, a former senator from Adamawa.
The ADC, which aims to unify diverse political interests in an attempt to overthrow the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was formally introduced in Abuja on Wednesday as the platform for a united opposition coalition.
In an interview with Vanguard, Abbo, a prominent member of the recently revealed opposition alliance, called the ADC’s adoption a “marriage of convenience.”

Politicians are gathered here, and politics is a game of interests—national, regional, and personal. He stated that although these disparate interests cannot be separated, they will be utilized.
Choosing candidates for all electoral offices, including the presidency, would be guided by democratic norms, Abbo said.

Candidates for every position will ultimately be chosen and elected using democratic processes. Remembering that this is really a temporary leadership structure is crucial. Following the congresses, a national convention would be held to elect the party’s national executives, he clarified.

In response, Abbo brushed aside worries about ideological disagreements inside the alliance as baseless, citing the APC’s 2013 founding as an example.

“Africa has seen similar incidents in the past. Interests in the country have brought together strangers. Additionally, the APC, the current ruling party, was a mash-up of many political and private interests. They formed the APC by combining members of the PDP, ANPP, CPC, and ACN. They ended up at the Villa because of that convenience marriage as well.

Because any marriage must be convenient in order to succeed, it is a marriage of convenience. You can’t have a marriage without convenience. “So, yes, it’s a convenient marriage, but it’s motivated by national interest,” he stated.
