Fresh concerns have been raised by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) over rising attacks on its train operations rail corridor after suspected villagers recently stoned a moving train along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
The Corporation said the attack on the train occurred around kilometre 177 on the Abuja-Kaduna highway where a group of unidentified persons gathered along the rail track and threw stones at a passing train damaging the windscreen of the lead locomotive.
The NRC spokesman, Callistus Unyimadu, stated that the development is alarming and that similar incidents have been recorded in the past two weeks, including Gidan Busa/Sarki Gora Village in Kakau District, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
“Within this period, approximately six attacks have been recorded along the corridor, posing serious risks to passenger safety, railway staff, and key infrastructure,” the statement said.
The statement said that the repeated acts are not only dangerous but also represent economic sabotage that could disrupt national transportation and undermine government investments in the railway sector.
The NRC said that train services continued with strengthened safety measures and railway personnel were on the lookout to ensure passengers reached their destinations safely despite the attacks.
The NRC said efforts are ongoing in collaboration with security operatives, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance, identify those responsible and bring perpetrators to justice with a view to bringing an end to the attacks.
It called on communities living along railway lines to support the protection of railway infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities and discouraging criminal acts.
It warned that ongoing attacks could hamper service provision unless urgent and collective action is taken.
