Following a startling increase in armed robberies targeting students, the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Students’ Representative Council, or SRC, has expressed concern over what it called a “climate of fear and blood” engulfing the campus community.
The student body demanded in a statement issued on Tuesday that the Osun State Government and pertinent security agencies act immediately and forcefully to stop what it described as the “reign of terror” being inflicted on Great Ife students.
According to the council, armed robbers attacked students at the Oreoluwa Hostel in Moremi Estate late on Monday night and took goods such laptops and phones. According to reports, some pupils were hurt in the assault.
“This is not a singular incident. The SRC said, “It is a continuation of a frightening trend that has continued for far too long, along with shameful silence from those tasked with protecting lives and property.”
The students questioned how the governor’s security votes were being used and accused the state government of being careless.
We are aware that the governor of Osun State, who also serves as the chief security officer, receives security votes worth millions of naira every month. But our pupils are still bleeding, and the streets of Ile-Ife are still dangerous. Where is the proof that these dollars are actually being used for security? The statement asked.
In order to restore safety on and around campus, the council encouraged the Divisional Police Officer of the Moore Division, Governor Ademola Adeleke, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to take immediate action.
The statement underlined that “our safety is our right and should not be viewed as a privilege.”
The ongoing housing problem that forces thousands of students to live off campus, where they are more susceptible to criminal attacks, was another issue that the SRC urged the university administration to address.
“When students are forced to live off campus because of subpar on-campus housing, safety cannot be ensured,” it continued.
The student leaders expressed their condolences to the most recent victims and pledged to keep calling for safety and responsibility until students are able to “live and learn in peace once again.”
“We insist on action. We want to be protected. Justice is what we demand,” the council continued.
