After two students, Oladepo Joshua and Ejike Kelechi, were arrested for demonstrating against Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike during a high-profile event on campus, tensions erupted at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Thursday.
Police officers from Ile-Ife’s Moore Division reportedly detained the students, but after a dramatic display of solidarity by their peers, who reportedly surrounded the police station and almost forced its closure, the students were freed.
The two had protested inside the Oduduwa Hall, where Wike was scheduled to give a speech at the 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture.
In video footage, the students were seen yelling and brandishing signs calling for restitution for Abuja citizens whose homes were reportedly demolished while Wike was the FCT Minister.
Before being taken away by security guards, the students chanted, “Compensate those whose houses you demolished.”
Students and onlookers had conflicting reactions to the demonstration, which caused instability among the university community.
According to several people who contacted to Sahara Reporters, the protest was put down by a former student named John Udeh, who was arrested in 2018 for cult-related crimes.
According to reports, Udeh, who was enrolled in Social Studies Education Part 2 at the time of his arrest, was observed addressing the demonstrators and obtaining their signs.

According to sources in the student body and university community, Udeh’s continuing presence on campus is concerning because, despite his prior imprisonment and prolonged stay at the university, he is still active and allegedly works with authorities to stifle opposition.
According to the source, “The school claimed that their fellow students had restrained them, but the person who led the group was arrested in 2018 as a cultist and later released.” Since then, he has allegedly been used by the school to intimidate pupils because he is a well-known cultist.
Thus, he was accustomed to attacking the two pupils who were demonstrating. After nine years, he is still enrolled in school when he ought to have quit.
