Both former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have expressed their sorrow at the passing of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, the anchor for Arise News.
She is affectionately known as Sommie, and she unfortunately died early on Monday, September 29, 2025, after being robbed at her home in the Katampe neighborhood of Abuja.

According to Peter Obi’s statement via 𝕏, the tragic event underscores how urgently the nation must put every citizen’s safety and security first.

He wrote: “May you rest in peace, The Somtochukwu Jesus Christelle Maduagwu.

“I am extremely saddened by the unfortunate and premature death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a great young anchor with Arise News, who was killed during a robbery attack in Abuja under the most agonizing circumstances.

“Somtochukwu, who was only 29 years old, had already made a name for herself as a talented broadcaster and accomplished lawyer whose voice inspired, educated, and engaged people. Her passing not only strikes a personal chord with her family and coworkers, but it also strikes a devastating blow to journalism and our country, which is still losing its best members due to violence and instability.

The essential necessity for our nation to put every citizen’s safety and security first is once again brought home by this tragic event. No Nigerian should die in such needless ways or go to sleep worrying about what the night might bring.

“My prayers and condolences are with her bereaved family, the Arise News family, and everyone else who is grieving her.” May she rest in peace, and may we as a country do more to create a society that values and protects human life.

Likewise, Atiku conveyed his sympathies to the deceased’s family and the Arise News management.

“I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise TV newscaster who was murdered in an armed robbery attack in Abuja,” he wrote. I also send my sympathies to @ARISEtv’s management and employees. I pray that the family, friends, and coworkers find solace in this loss at such a young age.
