Osun State’s All Progressives Congress, or APC, has blasted lawmakers elected on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) platform for demanding that federal funds be made available to the state’s local government councils.
Kola Olabisi, the Osun APC Director of Media and Information, released a statement in which the party claimed that members of the National and situation Assemblies who were associated with a PDP faction were lying about the situation of local government administration in Osun.
The response came after PDP lawmakers, including Senator Lere Oyewumi, held a news conference in Osogbo on Saturday and requested President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to designate council chairmen and council members they recognize to get federal funds.
The APC claims that current court decisions regarding council leadership are disregarded in the lawmakers’ appeal.
The party insisted that those holding the positions under its platform were legitimately doing their roles after being rehabilitated by court rulings.
“In accordance with the Court of Appeal’s ruling on February 10, 2025, the properly elected chairmen and council members have returned to their duties. The statement stated that it is inaccurate to characterize them as unauthorized occupants.
The APC cited a December 2025 ruling from the Supreme Court that it claimed clarified the council leadership’s legal position.
“It is evident from the ruling of the highest court who the legitimate officials are,” the party said.
In response to claims that APC officials were using police assistance to take over council secretariats, the party stated that security forces were carrying out their constitutional duty to uphold law and order.
“Law enforcement agencies have an obligation to maintain peace and enforce legal court rulings,” the statement continued.
Additionally, the APC questioned the rationale behind the PDP parliamentarians’ vote of confidence in Governor Ademola Adeleke and the state party leadership, claiming that it had nothing to do with the legal concerns pertaining to council administration.
It is crucial that elected officials make public statements that are consistent with current court rulings. It said that judicial decisions are not superseded by political support.
The party maintained that it would be contrary to the rule of law to provide federal funds to any group other than those recognized by the courts.
It said, “We maintain that the President will act in conformity with established judicial decisions and constitutional provisions.”
The APC said that several lawmakers’ stances were inconsistent with internal party dynamics, although it did not elaborate.
Political differences should not be confused with following legal orders, it argued.
The party mentioned that individuals were presently on trial for the murder of Remi Abass, a retired local government chairman in the Irewole Local Government Area.
“All cases before competent courts must be given the opportunity to be decided by justice,” the APC stated.
For the benefit of the locals, the party encouraged Governor Adeleke to cooperate with APC council representatives.
“For effective governance, collaboration within the legal framework is still crucial,” the statement continued.
