Governor Monday Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were allegedly making fun of their constituents for not formally resigning from their seats at the National Assembly, according to the Edo State Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP.
Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi, the state party’s caretaker committee chairman, made the comments during a news conference on Tuesday in Benin City.
Aziegbemi said that the governor and his deputy were depriving his constituents of proper representation by refusing to formally step down from their seats in the National Assembly.
“In violation of section 68(1)d of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Governor Monday Okpebholo and his Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, failed to formally step down from their Senate and House of Representatives seats two weeks after their inauguration on November 12, depriving their constituents of representation at the National Assembly.
“If a member of the Senate or the House of Representatives is appointed President, Vice President, Governor, Deputy Governor, Minister of the Government of the Federation, Commissioner of the Government of a State, or Special Adviser, he must resign his seat in the House of Representatives.”
How are they able to serve as both a senator and governor, as well as a member of the House of Representatives and a deputy governor?
“They should resign their membership, which would allow their seats to be declared vacant and open the door for a by-election. This is only right and constitutional.”
“But once more, the APC has continued to follow the notorious path, mocking their constituents, and thrives on illegality and lawlessness,” he stated.

In response, Monday Okpebholo’s chief press secretary, Fred Itua, charged that the PDP was being ignorant.
Once more, he claims, the PDP is blatantly showing its ignorance. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President of the Senate both announce the vacancies in their seats when members of the National Assembly are promoted.
However, he asked the Edo people to disregard the PDP’s blatant ignorance.
