President Bola Tinubu called himself a “die-hard democrat” on Wednesday and reiterated his dedication to democracy, national unity, and the rule of law.
At the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu addressed leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) during an interfaith breaking of fast.
The President identified himself as a devoted democrat who is committed to the stability, unity, and advancement of democracy in Nigeria.
“I am an ardent Democrat. I firmly adhere to that conviction and am still dedicated to a united Nigeria.
He declared, “That philosophy and that principle will live and die with me.”
Tinubu considered the sacrifices made over the years by pro-democracy campaigners and Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“I’m happy that we all support democracy and do it voluntarily and enthusiastically.
For 26 years, we have devotedly pursued it. He remarked, “Some of us still have bruises from the fight.”
The President recalled the experiences of activists who battled for the nation’s democratic governance.
“We protested, went to detention, and were attacked.” He remarked, “Some of us went into exile and founded NADECO.”
Tinubu emphasized that respect for the rule of law must serve as the foundation for democratic participation, which is still optional.
He pointed out that disagreement, debate, and majority rule are essential to democracy.
“A minority will speak up, even if they don’t get their way. He declared, “That is the sweetness and essence of democracy.”
The President called on political players to maintain their commitment to national stability while participating in constructive discourse.
“We must continue to be dedicated to the nation’s peace and stability while engaging in intellectual debate and honest interrogation of one another,” he stated.
Additionally, Tinubu discussed his choice to ratify the National Assembly’s Electoral Act.
“The National Assembly passed the Electoral Act with a resounding majority, so I signed it.”
“I surrendered to the principles of democracy and the rule of law,” he declared.
The President went on to say that tolerance, collaboration, and respect for one another are necessary for democracy.
“We need to build our democratic platform and make accommodations for each other.
“Peace, stability, and dedication to the rule of law are essential,” he declared.
