The country’s medical personnel, including doctors, will now be able to retire at age 65 instead of 60, as allowed by President Bola Tinubu.
Dr. Mannir Bature, the Nigerian Medical Association’s (NMA) National Publicity Secretary, revealed this in a statement released on Wednesday.
He went on to say that the allocation and distribution of the cash required to pay off their outstanding arrears has also been approved by President Tinubu.
It was pointed out by Bature that Prof. Muhammad Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, has been assigned the responsibility of formally sending the approval to the Council on Establishment through the Office of the Head of Service for final confirmation.
According to him, Pate broke the news of the policy change to key health sector stakeholders and NMA President Prof. Bala Audu during a significant meeting.
The coordinating minister has confirmed that the unpaid balances resulting from the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) modifications are set to be paid, he said.

In his statement, Mr. Bature cited the minister’s assertion that President Tinubu has approved the necessary changes to be made to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) as a result of the new minimum wage’s implementation.
He declared that the required monies had been obtained and that beneficiaries will shortly start receiving their payments.
“The corrective process is well underway, giving physicians and other healthcare professionals much-needed respite.
Assuring improved financial compensation and sustainability for healthcare services across the country, this will especially benefit members of the Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners and Nurses (ANPMPN).
