Residents of Agbado, Lagos State, on Wednesday protested at the office of Ikeja Electric over prolonged power outage in the community.
The protesters, mostly women, reportedly blocked the entrance to the office of the electricity distribution company, demanding immediate restoration of power supply to the area.
Residents say the blackout has persisted for several weeks, affecting economic activities, households and increasing the financial burden on residents who now rely heavily on alternative power sources.
Some community members complained the company did not give enough information about the cause of the outage or when power would be restored.
The demonstrators also said that several complaints made to the company had received little response, which led them to organise the protest.
The residents, who carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, called on the relevant authorities to intervene and ensure a permanent solution to the electricity crisis in the community.
The officials of Ikeja Electric appealed to residents to remain calm while reacting to the protest, explaining the outage was due to technical issues.
The company assured the community that work is ongoing to remedy the fault and restore stable power supply to the affected areas.
The protest is a sign of growing anger among residents in parts of Lagos over the persistent problems with electricity supply and the economic impact of long blackouts on homes and businesses.
