Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been reportedly taken to hospital after he collapsed during a clash between police operatives and protesters at Unity Fountain in Abuja.
The incident, which was reported to have happened during a Friday protest marking Democracy Day against insecurity, economic hardship and what protesters say is bad governance.
Vanguard quoted witnesses as saying that the protest which drew activists and civil society groups was dispersed after security operatives shot teargas canisters to disperse the gathering.
Eyewitnesses revealed that chaos erupted as protesters scrambled for safety in clouds of teargas.
Sowore was said to have been affected by the fumes and later lost consciousness in the confusion.
Supporters and fellow activists rushed to his aid and evacuated him from the protest ground.
Sources close to the activist said he was conscious when he was being driven away from the scene.
Sowore was reportedly taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical examination and treatment after the incident.
The development added to the tension at the protest site attended by demonstrators who condemned the police action.
The protesters had come out to demand urgent action on the rising insecurity, economic hardship and governance challenges in the country.
