The appointment of Dr. Terna Francis as the first Executive Secretary of the recently formed Benue Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board has been authorized by Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the appointment is effective immediately.
The old Bureau for Education Quality Assurance and the now-defunct Benue State Examinations body were combined into the new body as a result of a recent bill passed by the Benue State House of Assembly.
According to the statement, the goal of the merger is to bolster the education sector and guarantee that Benue children receive a comprehensive, competitive, and high-quality education that equips them to succeed anywhere in the world.
In addition to congratulating Dr. Francis on his appointment, Governor Alia encouraged him to use his background, moral character, and creativity to reposition the state’s quality assurance and education assessment systems.
Noting that education is still his administration’s top priority, he also tasked the incoming Executive Secretary with upholding excellence, responsibility, and transparency in the performance of his duties.
The governor added that the board must act as a catalyst for discipline, quality standards, and ongoing progress at all state educational levels.
Alia also confirmed Prof. Emmanuel Kenen’s appointment to the position of Acting Vice Chancellor of Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu University in Makurdi, which is a different development.
“In accordance with the provisions of the law establishing the University as contained in Gazette No. 3, Vol. 45, Part III, 16 (11 & 12),” the statement stated, “the governor, who is the visitor to the state-owned institution, made the appointment following the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council, which nominated Prof. Kenen to serve in an acting capacity for a period of not more than six (6) months.”
Upholding the university’s essential ideals of quality, discipline, innovation, and moral rectitude was another task Alia assigned to the incoming acting VC.
He stated that in order to produce graduates who would significantly contribute to the development of Benue State and Nigeria as a whole, the university must continue to be a hub for knowledge and character development.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to repositioning the state’s postsecondary education for global competitiveness through improved staff welfare, infrastructure, research development, and high academic standards.
Formerly called Benue State University, MOAUM was founded in 1991 and opened for business in the 1992–1993 academic year with four faculties: Arts, Education, Science, and Social Sciences.
