On Thursday, January 15, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima presided over events commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day at the Unknown Soldier cenotaph in Eagle Square, Abuja.
Shettima reportedly spoke on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, who is presently in the United Arab Emirates for the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The Ministry of Defense organizes the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day every year to honor Nigerian military officers and soldiers who gave their lives defending the country.
Military troops who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars, the Nigerian Civil War, several peacekeeping missions, and domestic security operations are among those honored.
In the ongoing battle against terrorism and insurgency, which the Federal Government has characterized as a threat to Nigeria’s corporate existence, special attention was given to soldiers who have lost their lives.
According to reports, in addition to honoring deceased warriors, the yearly event honors surviving veterans and offers a way to rally spiritual and financial support for their well-being.

Nigeria first commemorated Remembrance Day on November 11 with other Commonwealth members in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the World Wars.

However, Nigeria later picked January 15 to mark the conclusion of the Nigerian Civil War, making the commemoration more representative of the country’s history and realities.
