Omoyele Sowore, an activist and politician, says that the alleged assassination plot that fellow activist Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as Ijele, talked about is part of a larger and longer pattern of intimidation against people in Nigeria who speak out against the government.
Sowore said that Ofoegbu’s claim is “not an isolated incident,” but part of what he called a coordinated effort to silence people who speak out against injustice and oppression. He did say, though, that these kinds of actions would no longer stop the movement for change.
Sowore wrote on X, “The assassination plot against me, as revealed by Harrison Ofoegbu, also known as ‘@IjeleSpeaks2,’ is not an isolated incident.” It is part of a pattern of targeted violence and intimidation that is deeply troubling and meant to silence dissent and crush voices that speak out against injustice.
He said that this new information confirms what he has always believed: that there are people who want to threaten and maybe even kill outspoken people. He says that these actions are “neither random nor accidental,” but were planned out carefully.
Sowore also talked about how he and Ofoegbu had worked together in the past. Their first meeting was at the Federal High Court in Abuja during the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, where they had some problems at first but later became friends.
He also said that Ofoegbu had been targeted before by being arrested and held for a long time, with bail conditions that he said were hard to meet. Sowore said that there were also plans to move him to another facility in a way that he thought could have put his life in danger.
The activist connected these events to his own life, saying that he has survived several assassination attempts, some of which involved security personnel. He also talked about the death of his brother, Felix Olajide Sowore, in 2021, which he said is still a topic of debate.
Sowore said that the threats he had been getting were part of a pattern that started when he was a student activist at the University of Lagos in the 1990s. He said that security forces and other groups targeted student leaders back then.
He said that these actions were meant to make him stop talking, but he insisted that they had not worked.
People shouldn’t just ignore the recent things that @IjeleSpeaks2 has said.
“While he didn’t tell me the details of any plot, I have known for a long time that there have been several attempts on my life… But now it’s too late. The fight for complete freedom has already begun. He said, “Nothing can stop it.”
