Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former African Action Congress presidential candidate, has demanded that Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North, be immediately suspended and arrested on charges ranging from illegal detention and abuse of state security agencies to cross-border sex trafficking.
In a video posted on his 𝕏 account on Sunday, Sowore made the demand, stating that the situation went far beyond the purported unlawful arrest of Samuel Ojeogwu, also known as Sammy West, the brother of Regina Daniels.
“The outcry surrounding Senator Ned Nwoko goes far beyond the unlawful detention of his now-estranged wife, Regina Daniels’ brother, Sammy West,” he stated. What we are seeing is a part of a bigger, concerning trend involving the abuse of state power and the international exploitation of young girls.
Sowore claimed that Nwoko has a lengthy history of violating human rights with the help of Nigeria Police Force personnel, whom he referred to as “now-disgraced” policemen serving as the lawmaker’s “private enforcers.”
“This so-called billionaire was just throwing people in prison,” he said. When we arrived at the prison, we discovered nine individuals who had been imprisoned by the same Ned Nwoko from his town.
Sowore went on to say that Nwoko had previously “hijacked” a woman’s father after a disagreement, and that multiple families had publicly accused the Senator of oppressing them with the police.
“Anybody who is a public figure, who is in political office, our duty, first and foremost, is to hold them to account, no matter how powerful they are,” he said.
Additionally, the activist charged the Senator with “international sex trafficking crimes,” claiming that he transported minors into Nigeria from Morocco and other nations.
He made it clear that the goal of his intervention was to stop what he called the systematic misuse of police and political authority, not to defend Regina Daniels.
“I’m not fighting for Regina Daniels,” declared Sowore. I’m battling against the misuse of power by a Nigerian senator who has a history of utilizing the police to oppress people and is conspiring with the Nigerian police.
He mentioned the arrest of TikToker Timothy Gabriel (Turmar), who was taken into custody after making allegations regarding the children of Regina Daniels.
“The Senator got the Nigerian police, got Turmar arrested, and sent him to prison,” he claimed. He was forced to apologize after being severely beaten when he emerged.
He also talked about his personal encounter with nine prisoners in 2021 who were supposedly imprisoned at Nwoko’s request because to a property issue involving the Senator’s Sports University project.
Sowore accused the Nigeria Police Force of facilitating Nwoko’s activities.
“Ned has a huge amount of support from the Nigerian police,” he stated. Every day they go to his house to dine. The Nigerian police should be ashamed for giving away their force for free.
The activist stated that the fight against impunity and human rights abuses ingrained in Nigeria’s political and security institutions was the root of his demand for accountability.
