Four people, including three policemen and a female suspect, lost their lives in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo local government area of Ondo State, when a truck driver lost control and rammed into the police van.
It was gathered that the tragedy occurred after the policemen from the state command headquarters travelled to Ore to arrest the female suspect, who also died in the accident.
According to an eyewitness, the accident occurred when the driver of the truck coming from the Ijebu-Ode axis lost control, crossed the median, and rammed into the police van conveying the four police officers and the female suspect.
He said three of the police officers and the female suspect died on the spot, while the surviving police officer, who was seriously injured, was rushed to the hospital.
He said, “the female suspect, yet to be identified, and the three police officers died on the spot.”
“The remaining officer was immediately rushed to an undisclosed health facility in the town for medical attention, having sustained serious injuries.”
Another source explained that the police officers, who were on the monitoring units of the state police command, were said to have left Akure to make an arrest in the area.
Spokesperson for the state Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, there was an accident involving police officers, but I cannot give you the details now because we do not have the details,” she said.
Meanwhile, the State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, who confirmed the incident, said the accident occurred as a result of overspeeding by the trailer driver.
The road traffic officer confirmed that the remains of the casualties were deposited in the morgue of a state health facility in Ore.
